Target Field Gets Some Spring Training Of Its Own

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) - With exactly two weeks away from the Twins home opener, it looks like anything but baseball season outside.

The next two weeks will be busy for the Target Field grounds crew and ballpark operations staff. They're working extended 12-hour shifts to get the ballpark ready for April 1.

Snow and ice has piled up in the stands. Kevin Smith, senior director of corporate communications and broadcasting for the Twins, says hot water and Mother Nature are the main tools they will use.

"The plan they have now is to power wash everything down, get things melted off and let the sun do what it can, too," Smith said.

The field itself is good to go. The underground heating system has the turf a toasty 64 degrees.

Some of the big piles of snow around the park will get put into a machine - nicknamed "the dragon" - and melted away.
