Edina Moms Sniff Out 6 Gas Leaks
EDINA, Minn. (WCCO) -- Two suburban moms, who have detected six underground gas leaks, say their simple morning routine may be stopping explosions in their neighborhood.
Working moms Lesli Hines and Cindy Pascale never could squeeze in exercise into their lives, so they began walking with their dogs at 5 a.m. Now, their walks in their neighborhood near Edina High School have taken on a new urgency.
"Based on what Cindy and I have found in the mornings, six sites where we've smelled gas and they've been confirmed," Hines said.
The women believe it is only because of a unique talent of Pascale's that they have found the leaks.
"Scents will bother me when they don't bother other people." Pascale said.
After each confirmed leak Centerpoint Energy has come and dug up the gas lines and repaired them.
However, Hines and Pascale feel Centerpoint is minimizing the threat.
"They are telling me these are small, normal leaks, and it doesn't feel normal to me," Hines said.
A massive gas explosion this March at 60th Street and Nicollet Avenue and the explosion of an Edina home last year intensify their fears.
"Do we have to wait till something like that to happen before somebody addresses this," Hines said.
Centerpoint says there is nothing to worry about.
"The overall condition of the gas line in this area is in good shape," Centerpoint spokesperson Rebecca Virden said. "We regularly conduct and do leak surveys in compliance with the law, rules and regulations."
Hines and Pascale say they would like a comprehensive review of all the gas lines in the area. Pascale says she doesn't feel safe in her neighborhood. The two plan to keep walking to the neighborhood safe.
"We can't wait to be right in such a dramatic way," Hines said.
Centerpoint says anyone who thinks they smell gas should call Centerpoint's emergency gas leak number at 612-372-5050
