Boy Or Girl? Bakery Has Answer For Expecting Parents
EDINA, Minn. (WCCO) -- It's one of those life-changing moments: Not only finding out you're going to be a parent, but whether it's a boy or a girl.
An Edina bakery has all the ingredients for that sweet surprise. At the Queen of Cakes bakery, the baker knows the sex of babies before the expecting parents do.
Owner Terri Leckas said it all started about two years ago with a customer request. Now, she gets calls from around the country for what's known as a "gender reveal" cake, now one of the business's most special deliveries.
Holly and Rick Russie, a Brooklyn Park couple expecting a baby, recently asked their doctor to seal their ultrasound results in an envelope. The couple rushed the envelope to the bakery and ordered their gender reveal cake.
The next day, baker Liz Mauricio peeked inside.
"What are we looking at here?" said Mauricio. "It's a girl...It's a girl!" she shouted to the staff, as she began to turn the cake batter pink.
"That's their joy, that's their life right there. When they see that, that's priceless, it really is," said Mauricio.
Leckas helps make the cake more of a mystery with white frosting and question marks, hiding the pink cake. Her bakery now makes an estimated 100 gender reveal cakes every year.
"This is our way to be part of their family. You feel like the godmother or fairy godmother, just knowing that little bit of magic makes it a boy or a girl," said Leckas. "To want to become a mother is one thing. To become the mother of a son, or of a daughter, sets the tone for the rest of your life."
That's why the Russies planned a bash to learn the gender of their first child, and invited dozens of their closest friends and family.
They waited until the end of the party to cut into the cake. The couple and the party crowd all put in their vote.
"We are going to find out we are having a boy!" said Rick, confident in his prediction.
"Come on now, we are going to find out we are having a girl!" said Holly.
She said she just knew it, and the couple agreed they couldn't wait another moment.
Together, the soon-to-be parents cut into a slice of pink cake, while the crowd in their living room cheered.
"I am happy, I was right!" said Holly, with a smile and hug for her husband.
For soon-to-be parents, the surprise of a baby girl is exactly that, just icing on the cake.
