Bite Of Minnesota: Spicy Hot Chocolate

Keeping warm in the winter is not an easy thing to do, especially in Minnesota.  Sure, we can stay indoors, wear lots of layers when outside or sit by the fireplace to keep warm, but sometimes we need a little extra warmth.  That is where hot chocolate comes in handy ... and this isn't your normal hot chocolate. This hot chocolate is spicy thanks to a sprinkle of cayenne and will be a hit with all those spicy mocha lovers out there -- just add some java.

If you have marshmallows, throw those on top for some added fun.

Thanks to my friend, Kate, we can all enjoy a variation on the classic hot chocolate recipe and keep warm while we're at it.

Happy Holidays to the Bite of Minnesota readers!

Spicy Hot Chocolate
Recipe from Fork, Knife & Spoon
(serves 2)

2 cups milk
1/8 tsp ground cayenne pepper
1 tbsp cocoa powder
1/4 tsp pumpkin pie spice
1 1/2 tsp sugar
1/2 tsp vanilla extract
2oz chocolate, broken into pea sized bits

Whisk together milk, cayenne pepper, cocoa powder, pumpkin pie spice, and sugar. Over low heat, bring to a boil watching carefully. Remove from heat, add chocolate pieces and cover, waiting two minutes and stirring until chocolate melts and incorporates into liquid. Add vanilla and pour into mugs.
