MIAMI (CBSMiami) - The National Transportation Safety Board is investigating Monday's crash landing of a Piper PA-28 near Homestead General Aviation Airport.
The plane went down around 4 p.m. in a grassy near 287th Street and SW 217th Avenue.
The nose of the 1966 single engine plane detached – the plane landing on its belly.
The pilot, Santiago Gonzalez, was unconscious when he was taken by helicopter to Jackson Memorial South.
The other person on the plane was fine, but taken to the hospital to be checked out.
On factor in the NTSB's investigation will be the weather. There was heavy rain in the area at the time the plane attempted to land from the north on the runway.
"He has been a pilot for many years," said Gonzalez's ex-wife who did not want to be identified in this report.
She said he was skilled pilot and was simply enjoying a day off – doing what he loved the most.
"I feel very sorry, I hope he recovers soon," she said.
