FSU shooting suspect Phoenix Ikner booked on murder charges after hospital release, police say
The Florida State University student accused of perpetrating a deadly campus mass shooting in April was released from the hospital and booked into jail Monday on felony charges, the Tallahassee Police Department said.
Phoenix Ikner is the main suspect in the April 17 FSU campus shooting that left two people dead and six others injured.
Ikner was discharged from a Tallahassee hospital and charged with murder, authorities said. The 20-year-old was booked into the Leon County Detention Facility on two counts of first-degree murder and seven counts of attempted first-degree murder, according to a statement from the Leon County Sheriff's Office.
He was later transferred to the Wakulla County Detention Facility, a move authorities say is standard procedure when an inmate is related to a Leon County deputy.
Ikner is the stepson of an 18-year veteran of the Leon County Sheriff's Office who currently serves as a school resource officer. She was named employee of the month in March 2024 and has since been placed on personal leave and reassigned from her post.
The April 2025 FSU campus shooting
Authorities say Ikner arrived on campus on the morning of April 17 and lingered near a parking garage before walking in and out of buildings and green spaces, firing a handgun just before lunchtime.
In roughly four minutes, Tallahassee police officers confronted Ikner and shot him, ending the rampage. He had been hospitalized in serious condition until his release Monday.
Investigators believe Ikner used a former service weapon belonging to his stepmother, officials said. The shooting claimed the lives of a university dining worker and a campus vendor and left six others injured.
Ikner, a political science student at FSU, will remain in custody at the Wakulla County jail as he awaits his first court appearance. Online jail and court records Monday did not list an attorney for him.
The investigation remains ongoing.
