Santa Clarita shooting outside popular recreation center leaves 1 dead, 1 critically injured
Authorities said a man died and another is in critical condition after a shooting outside a popular recreation center where a quinceañera was being held in Santa Clarita on Saturday night.
According to the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department, deputies responded to the 20800 block of Centre Pointe Parkway, outside the George A. Carvalho Sports Complex, at about 10:50 p.m. on reports of a shooting in the parking lot.
Upon arrival, deputies found two men suffering from gunshot wounds. Both were transported to a local hospital.
One of the men was later pronounced dead. He remains publicly unidentified. The second man remains in critical condition, according to the LASD.
A person of interest has been detained in relation to the case. It's unclear whether they'll face charges.
Partygoers told CBS LA that there were children nearby when the shooting broke out.
"Fifteen-year-old's birthday party, so you teenagers, what not, just having fun," said a man named Gilbert who was at the party. "My 16-year-old was here and it really affected her. There's no way to unsee what she's seen."
He says that at least one of the men involved in the shooting was a guest at the party, and that he told children to duck for cover before rushing to the parking lot to try and help the victim.
"My buddies' coworkers were here, [lying] over here by the curb, and that's who I came out to assist to put pressure on him and the wound until paramedics and the PD came," Gilbert said.
Another witness who wished to remain anonymous said that they heard two guns firing off.
"About 13, 14 shots," the man said. "It is [traumatizing] for the kids. I only can speak for my daughter, she is scared."
Partygoers say that everyone inside the party was held until around 4 a.m. as LASD detectives investigated the incident.
