South Florida address tied to Brown University shooting suspect, investigators say

The search for the Brown University shooting suspect has come to an end after he was found dead on Thursday, and investigators say his last known address was in South Florida.

On Thursday night and again Friday morning, CBS News Miami went to the address in Ives Estates, an unincorporated area of northeast Miami-Dade County just west of Aventura, where a man who answered the door said he didn't know the suspect and declined to talk.

The Brown University shooting suspect, who was identified as 48-year-old Claudio Neves Valente, was a Portuguese national living in the U.S. legally, Rhode Island and federal officials said.

Authorities closed in on a storage facility in Salem, New Hampshire, where they said they found him dead from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Brown University officials said Neves Valente was a physics PHD student at the university between 2000-2001, before he dropped out. Officials said he likely took classes in the building where he allegedly opened fire last Saturday, killing two students and injuring nine others

Police said he is also believed to have shot and killed Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) Professor Nuno Leirero on Monday night. Both of them had attended the same school program back in their native Portugal.

Investigators said it was only a matter of time before they got him.

"This was always going to be an investigation where something was going to break it open," Rhode Island Attorney General Peter Neronha said.

Break in Brown University shooting investigation came from Reddit post, investigators say

The key to the break in the case, investigators say, came from a Reddit post.

According to a police affidavit, investigators interviewed an anonymous Reddit poster three days ago. Officials said the person described seeing Valente with a gray Nissan Sentra.

Investigators tracked the car to a rental company in Boston, where Valente allegedly used his real name on the rental application.

Neighbors recall seeing suspect, law enforcement in neighborhood

The person living inside the home that was listed as the last known address for the suspected Brown University shooter said he didn't know the suspect and didn't recognize the suspect.

CBS News Miami spent the morning in the neighborhood speaking with residents, and many of them said that they, too, didn't know who the suspect was.

However, one man who lives across the street from the suspect's last known address said he was sure that he spotted the suspect in the area last month.

Other residents said they noticed law enforcement in the area recently.

Yesterday we had Metro Dade police officers, and then people were posted up throughout the block in undercover vehicles," neighbor Edward Pol said. "They parked next to my house. I mean, it kind of seemed a little strange."

Pol said he's not surprised that this kind of thing could happen in his neighborhood.

"It could be anybody," he said. "It could be in your neighborhood, in my neighborhood. I don't put anything past anybody today. I'm not surprised at all. It's not going to change our neighborhood at all. It's a very safe neighborhood."

On Friday morning, the Miami-Dade Sheriff's Office sent CBS News Miami a statement confirming law enforcement was in the area in regards to the investigation.

"The Miami-Dade Sheriff's Office (MDSO) was requested to assist in locating a suspect connected to the Brown University shooting," the MDSO said. "Deputies responded to a location provided through a tip; however, the search did not yeild any results."

The MDSO said it remained committed to assisting local state and federal law enforcement in investigations whenever it is requested to do so.
