(CBSMiami) -- A baseball collector's dream has been discovered more than a hundred years in the making.

A family said they had no idea they were sitting on a treasure trove of baseball cards in their great-grandfather's attic.

Inside a crumpled paper bag were seven original Ty Cobb baseball cards dated from the early 1900's. The family, who wanted to remain anonymous, said it was almost thrown away.

"A family was combing through the possessions of their great-grandfather and at the bottom of a crumpled paper bag, beneath some postcards and other paper goods, these seven cards were found clustered together, face down, at the very base of the bag. And at first, they thought it was trash and luckily one of the family members said, 'Let me sift through the contents of this bag' and thankfully they did," said Joe Orlando, the president of Professional Sports Authenticator in Newport Beach, California, who verified the find.

The cards are considered the best-preserved versions in history.

"This particular Ty Cobb card is associated with the T206 series and these cards were distributed with tobacco products. Before this find, there were only 15 known examples of this particular Ty Cobb card, so to find seven in one shot is simply miraculous," said Orlando.

Ty Cobb was a legendary outfielder for the Detroit Tigers from 1905 to 1928.
