The James Beard Foundation has announced its 2026 semifinalist list, which includes chefs and venues from Michigan.
Chef Hajime Sato, who owned Sozai in Clawson, announced the closure on social media Sunday, saying, "It is clear that the best thing for my family is for us to return to the Pacific Northwest."
Michigan has several entries named as James Beard semifinalists for outstanding chefs, bakeries and restaurants.
While Sato is proud of winning the James Beard Award for 2024, he says there will be another winner next year and hopes his message of sustainability lasts the longest, especially with sushi.
Hajime Sato, chef and owner of Sozai, a sustainable sushi restaurant in Clawson, won a James Beard Award for Best Chef: Great Lakes.
This year's James Beard Award ceremony is June 10, and two Michigan nominees are up for the prestigious culinary award.
