Dozens attended the 4th of July parade in Glen Ellyn. There were also appearances by impersonators "Andy Warhol" and "Doc Brown" from "Back to the Future." Once it gets dark, the village plans to host a fireworks show.
It was an emotional 4th of July for the Highland Park community, marking one year since a gunman killed seven people and injured dozens more at the annual parade. The city spent Tuesday remembering and moving forward.
"This doesn't end today. This is not just next year. This is lifetimes of impact. And so we as a community are going to be there for each other."
Highland Park Mayor Nancy Rotering realizes the healing process has no timeline, but she wants people to continue to lean on each other.
Moments after the ceremony, neighbors made their way to the community walk.
CBS 2's Jackie Kostek reports from Highland Park where a number of events are taking place to remember those killed last July 4th and how the community is honoring lives lost as well as reclaiming the space.
While fireworks are enjoyed by many on the Fourth of July, the loud booms can be extremely frightening for dogs.
The area was evacuated, and attendees were asked to shelter in personal vehicles of at the Bartlett Community Center.

"Just thinking about what a good, giving loving person just makes the cruelty and horror of his death that much harder to take."
The Lutheran Church Charities Comfort Dogs were here giving support shortly after the shooting, and they'll be back this Tuesday.
"We were told, whatever you start, be prepared to do over the course of the next three years, because it takes time," said United Way of Lake County vice president Gail Graves.
The family is now building a new home that's fully accessible for Cooper.
The family would never be the same, but now, they say they're focusing their energy on moving forward.
Cooper and Luke celebrated their ninth birthday this week and just finished third grade. Their mother said Cooper has taken up swimming and is just tackling life head-on.
Over the last year, those seeds of change have sprouted into measurable transformations at the state level.
"It felt to me that we needed a way to take our grief and move forward in a way that will give us, and our children in particular, the chance to experience the Fourth of July again in the future."
Pyrotecnico creates firework shows and effects for the White Sox, Bears, Bulls, Blackhawks, the city of Chicago, and Navy Pier, among others across the region and around the world.
