The new indictment of actor Jussie Smollett issued Tuesday not only raises new questions about his case and Cook County State's Attorney Kim Foxx's handling of it – it also comes down weeks before the Illinois primary election.
"What happened to Pedro Ruiz in the Cook County Jail, while in Cook County's custody, was not just easily preventable, was not just forseeable, but was absolutely disgraceful," said Ruiz family attorney Nenye Uche.
Christian Gonzalez, who was being held in the jail on attempted murder charges, has been charged with first-degree murder, days after his cellmate, 19-year-old Pedro Ruiz, was found bleeding and unresponsive in his cell early Saturday morning.
The officer called a sergeant, telling the sergeant what Gonzalez said. Two sergeants and a lieutenant arrived at the cell. They "unsecured the cell door." That's when they saw Ruiz on the floor near the door covered in blood.
Arrest reports CBS 2 found in court documents show the beating victim Ruiz and his cell mate, are all members of different street gangs.
As the pool of blood around the man's head grows, an inmate throws a joker card, from a deck of playing cards, on top of him. Sources said that's significant, indicating there are ongoing feuds inside the jail taking place between different gangs.
Around 2 a.m., correctional officers found 19-year-old Pedro Ruiz unresponsive in the cell he shared with another inmate.
If he'd been outside his patrol car then, he wouldn't be here today.
