The rat birth control program has been effective in Chicago. The Wicker Park & Bucktown Chamber of Commerce implemented this trial last year.
Chicago's rodent problem is well known, but a new pilot program testing rat birth control to curb the population in problem areas is underway to help rein it in.
Crews will install bait boxes with rat birth control in alleys behind several major stretches of Wicker Park and Bucktown.
This comes as reproductive rights are being rolled back at both the state and federal levels. The new birth control pill takes a step in the opposite direction.
It's the first contraceptive made widely available without a prescription.
“Opill” can now be bought directly from its company website and through Amazon.
The Opill should be in stores and online in the coming days and weeks. If taken as directed, the company said the pill is 98% effective at preventing pregnancy. It costs about $20 for a one-month supply.
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration approved the first over-the-counter birth control pill, allowing Americans to buy Opill, a daily oral contraceptive, without a prescription.
Perrigo wants to sell its Opill brand birth control pills in stores without a prescription.
