5 killed, 36 hurt in shootings across Chicago during Fourth of July weekend, police say
At least five people were killed and 36 others were wounded in shootings across Chicago during the Fourth of July weekend, according to police.
The ages of the victims range from 16 to 52.
Shootings from Thursday
In the first shooting of the weekend, a man, 49, was near the alley around 5 p.m. in the 300 block of East Kensington Avenue when he was hit by gunfire. He self-transported to Roseland Hospital in serious condition.
Hours later, around 8:18 p.m., another man, 40, was in the 300 block of East 117th Street when he was inside a vehicle and was approached by another unknown vehicle. The driver from inside pulled out a gun and then fired shots in the victim's direction, hitting him in the thigh.
The victim self-transported to Roseland Hospital in series condition.
Chicago police officers later responded to the 0-100 block of North Hamlin Avenue just before 9 p.m., where a man, 36, suffered multiple gunshots about the body. He was taken to Stroger Hospital in series condition.
Another man, 33, was shot during an argument in the 11900 block of South Wallace Avenue around 9:30 p.m.
Police said the gunman shot the victim and fled the scene.
The victim was taken to Christ Hospital in series condition with a gunshot wound to the abdomen.

Shootings from Friday
- At 12:04 a.m. in the 3400 block of West Cermak Road, a 47-year-old man was traveling on a bicycle when a black SUV drove past, and an unknown person from inside opened fire. The victim was hit in the right flank and was taken to Mt. Sinai Hospital in serious condition.
- At 1:54 a.m. in the 9700 block of South Harvard Avenue, a 20-year-old man told police that he was driving when he got into an argument with unknown men driving in two separate vehicles, who pulled out guns and shot at the victim. The victim suffered a graze wound to the left eye and was taken to Christ Hospital in good condition.
- At 2 a.m. in the 3400 block of West 62nd Place, CPD officers found the victim, a 52-year-old man, unresponsive. A witness told them that two unknown men approached the victim on foot and shot at him. The victim suffered a gunshot wound to the back and died at the scene.
- At 5:45 p.m., in the 300 block of North Cicero Avenue, a 31-year-old man was shot in the neck while he was on the sidewalk. The victim was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital in critical condition.
- At 8:18 p.m. in the 5900 block of South Justine Street, a 34-year-old man told responding officers that he was outside when he heard a loud noise and felt pain. The victim was shot in the left hand and was taken to the University of Chicago Medical Center in good condition.
- At 9:57 p.m. in the 1300 block of North Springfield Avenue, a 33-year-old woman was outside when she felt a sharp pain. The victim was shot in the right foot and was taken to Stroger Hospital in good condition. The victim was unable to provide further details of the incident.
- At 10:30 p.m. in the 6400 block of South Yale Avenue, officers responded to a walk-in person shot at St Bernard Hospital. The victim, a 38-year-old man, suffered a gunshot graze wound to the thigh. The victim was in good condition. The victim was unable to provide officers with details of the incident.
- At 10:35 p.m. in the 7600 block of South Bishop Street, officers found the victim, a 25-year-old man, lying on the corner with a gunshot wound to the chest. The victim was taken to Christ Hospital in critical condition. The victim and witnesses were uncooperative in providing details of the incident to officers.
- At 10:57 p.m. in the 1200 block of East 83rd Street, officers responded to Jackson Park Hospital for a call of two victims who suffered gunshot wounds. The victims were approached on foot by an unknown man who pulled out a gun and fired shots in the victims' direction. The first victim, a 35-year-old man, suffered a gunshot wound to the right thigh and is in good condition. The second victim, a 16-year-old girl, was shot in the throat and was pronounced dead at Jackson Park Hospital.
- At 10:58 p.m. in the 8500 block of South Rhodes Avenue, a 38-year-old woman told police that a dark sedan drove by, and someone opened fire. The victim was hit in the rear and was taken to the University of Chicago Medical Center in good condition.
- At 11:11 p.m. in the 4800 block of South Justine Street, officers responded to a call of multiple people shot. They said two unknown men approached the victims on foot, pulled out guns, and opened fire into a crowd of people who were standing outside, striking seven victims, ages 21 to 42. Three were taken to Mt. Sinai in serious condition. Four others were taken to U of C in critical to serious condition, police said.
- At 11:30 p.m. in the 6800 block of South Calumet Avenue, officers responded to a walk-in person shot at the University of Chicago Hospital. The victim, a 41-year-old woman, told responding officers that she was outside when she heard a loud noise and felt pain. The victim was shot in the right forearm and is in good condition.
- At 11:55 p.m. in the 6400 block of South Winchester Avenue, the victim, a 36-year-old man, was found by officers with a gunshot wound to the head. The victim was taken to the University of Chicago Medical Center, where he died.
Shootings from Saturday
- At midnight in the 6000 block of South Ashland Avenue, officers responded to a person who was shot at Little Company of Mary Hospital. The victim, a 37-year-old man, told officers that he heard multiple loud noises and felt pain. The victim was shot in the right forearm and self-transported to Little Company of Mary Hospital in good condition. The victim was unable to provide details of the incident.
- At 1:30 a.m. in the 5900 block of South Damen Avenue, officers responded to a call of a walk-in person shot at Holy Cross Hospital. The victim, a 21-year-old man, told officers that he was standing outside when he heard shots and felt pain. He was hit in the left leg and right knee and is listed in good condition. The victim was unable to provide details of the incident.
- At 1:46 a.m. in the 2700 block of South California Boulevard, officers responded to a call of walk-in gunshot victims at Mt Sinai Hospital. Preliminary reports indicated that someone in a dark SUV drove past the victims, who were inside a parked vehicle, pulled out a gun, and shot into their vehicle. Three men, 25, 26, and 32, were hit about the body and were in critical condition. A 33-year-old man was shot in the leg and was in fair condition.
- At 4:09 a.m. in the 1500 block of West 71st Street, two men, 18 and 19, were walking when they heard shots and felt pain. The 18-year-old was shot in the right ankle and taken to the University of Chicago Hospital in good condition. The 19-year-old was shot in the right thigh and taken to Holy Cross Hospital in good condition. The gunman fled the scene. No other injuries were reported.
- At 4:57 a.m. in the 1000 block of North Lavergne Avenue, the victim, a 30-year-old man, was found unresponsive with a gunshot wound to the head. The male was pronounced dead on the scene.
- At 7:24 p.m., a 19-year-old man was shot in the 3800 block of West 30th Street. He was taken to a local hospital in good condition.
- At 9:48 a.m. in the 800 block of North Cambridge Avenue, the victim, a 46-year-old man, was inside a vehicle when he was shot multiple times in the back and died at the scene. The offenders then fled in a dark-colored vehicle. One person of interest is in custody.
- At 10:10 p.m. in the 2600 block of South Central Park Avenue, officers responded to a walk-in person shot at Mt Sinai Hospital. The victim, a 47-year-old man, suffered a gunshot wound to the abdomen and self-transported to Mt Sinai Hospital in critical condition. The victim could not provide any further information to responding officers about the incident.
- At 10:28 p.m., two people were shot in the 5200 block West Ferdinand Street. Police said a 27-year-old man is in critical condition and a 25-year-old man is in fair condition.
- At 10:30 p.m. a 25-year-old man was shot in the 100 block North Lorel Avenue. He was taken to a local hospital in good condition.
- At 11 p.m. in the 2300 block of South Whipple Street, officers responded to a walk-in person shot at Mt Sinai Hospital. The victim, a 19-year-old man, suffered a gunshot wound to the right abdomen and self-transported to Mt. Sinai Hospital in good condition. The victim told officers that he was driving Southbound on Whipple when he heard a loud noise and felt pain.
- At 11:43 p.m. in the 9400 block of South Union Avenue, the victim, a 43-year-old woman, related to officers that she heard shots and felt pain. The victim suffered a gunshot wound to the left leg and was taken to Christ Hospital in good condition. The victim was unable to provide further details of the incident.
Shootings from Sunday
- At 12:20 a.m. in the 700 block of East 60th Street, the victim, a 41-year-old man, told responding officers that an unknown man on a motorbike drove past and shot him. The victim suffered a gunshot wound to the chest and self-transported to the University of Chicago Medical Center in critical condition.
- At 1:38 a.m. in the 4100 block of West Carroll Avenue, a 26-year-old man told police an unknown man drove past in a dark vehicle, opened fire in his direction, and fled. The victim was hit in his right wrist and abdomen and was transported to Mt Sinai Hospital in good condition.
- At 3 a.m. in the 5300 block of South Kedzie Avenue, a 33-year-old man was walking when a red vehicle drove past him, and an unknown man from inside shot him. The victim was shot in the left clavicle and was taken to Christ Hospital in fair condition.
- At 4:57 p.m. in the 9600 block of South Brennan Avenue, a 19-year-old man, while inside a vehicle, was shot twice in his chest and three times in his right leg. He was taken to the University of Chicago Medical Center in critical condition.
Unless otherwise noted, no arrests were made in either incident.
The totals are still lower than last year when 19 people were killed and 87 others were wounded during the Fourth of July weekend.
