One week to the day after a July 4th parade shooting battered the tight-knit community of Highland Park, the impact on the community's young adults is now becoming clear.
The victims – a 19-year-old man and two 29-year-old men – were in a vacant lot in the 1400 block of South Komensky Avenue when someone came and shot them all.
Cook County Public Guardian Charles Golbert submitted 12 pages Monday of what he calls systemic failures by the Illinois Department of Children and Family Services.
"It was such a spectacular sight, it was mind-blowing," Hilde Bialach said. "To me, it felt symbolic."
So many people bought the $20 bracelets Monday that the story had to suspend sales while workers caught up.
The victims were a 20-year-old woman and 17-year-old boy.
"People feeling so much stronger together. And if there is any community that can pull through this, and see the light at the end of this darkness, I truly believe that it is this community."
All contributions to the fund will go directly to victims, survivors, and organization who support them.
As Highland Park remains in shock and grief following the massacre a week ago at the July 4th parade, support is pouring in from other communities.
