Police: Man Swiped Credit Cards From Gym, Spent Thousands

CONCORD, Mass. (CBS) -- Police say they've arrested a thief who spent thousands of dollars using credit cards stolen from a gym locker room.

Concord police arrested 32-year-old Pablo Riviera, of Worcester, Wednesday afternoon. He is charged with multiple crimes, including 11 counts of ID theft.

On February 11, police say Riviera stole a debit card from the Beede Center Gym, located the PIN number, and withdrew more than $3,000 from ATMs in Concord and Acton. He also bought more than $8,000 worth of merchandise from jewelry stores in Leominster, police said.

Riviera returned to the gym on February 19, wearing a dark peacoat and sporting a black beard, police said. He allegedly swiped an American Express Card and shopped at the Natick Mall and stores on Newbury Street in Boston.

Officials said Riviera went back to the same gym Wednesday afternoon and staff called police.

"This case is a clear example of the effectiveness of the Concord Police working together with the community," Police Chief Joseph O'Connor said. "I am pleased that the employees maintained a high degree of vigilance and called police immediately upon this suspect's return."

Police had described the man sought as well-dressed, about 6 feet, 2 inches tall, olive-skinned and weighing roughly 180 pounds.

Police say they are also looking to identity a second man who may be traveling with Riviera.

Anyone with information is asked to call police.

According to police, Riviera had several items in his possession when he was arrested, including an American Express card belonging to one of the victims.

In total, Riviera faces 27 charges for the alleged thefts.
