Vehicles Ordered To Stay At Mansfield Commuter Rail Station Following Fatality
MANSFIELD (CBS) -- Police ordered cars to remain in the parking lot of the Mansfield Commuter Rail Station overnight after a person was struck and killed by an Acela train on Wednesday.
Authorities say a 47-year-old man hopped a fence at the station and was hit by an oncoming train going over 100 mph.
"This is a stark reminder that people need to be aware of their surroundings, " said Transit Police Superintendent Rich Sullivan, "These trains are going at a very high rate of speed, and you can't even hear them until they're right on you."
The station was closed Thursday as crews worked to clean the scene. Commuters' cars had to be disinfected, and washed. The train tracks in Mansfield had to be power washed. Even the roof of the station had to be cleaned.
Police said drivers would be able to pick up their cars starting at 3p.m.
"Due to continued cleanup on Mansfield Ave., those vehicles parked there will be brought to you by a representative of the MBTA," Mansfield Police posted on Facebook.
The victim has not been identified. His car was left at the Attleboro station.
