Baltimore City declares Code Blue Extreme Cold Alert through Thursday morning
BALTIMORE -- Baltimore City is under a Code Blue Cold Alert from Tuesday, Jan. 14 through Thursday, Jan. 16 due to freezing temperatures, according to the Health Department.
After a brief warm-up on Monday, Arctic air returned to Maryland overnight, sending temperatures down into the low 20s Tuesday morning, according to the First Alert Weather Team. Gusty winds between 10 to 20 mph are also expected.
Baltimore City Health officials said forecasted wind chills are expected to drop to 13 degrees and remain in the teens through Thursday morning.
Cold-related deaths
So far this winter, 12 people have died from cold-related illnesses across the state, the Maryland Health Department (MDH) reported. Three of those deaths happened in Baltimore City and two were in Baltimore County.
MDH data also shows 24 emergency department and urgent care visits in the region between Dec. 29, 2024, and Jan. 4, 2025.
Cold weather conditions can increase the risks of frostbite, hypothermia and other cold-related injuries.

Baltimore snowstorm
The Baltimore region saw its first major snowstorm of the season on January 6 which brought the biggest snowfall since 2022.
The First Alert Weather Team estimated about 3 to 12 inches of snow fell across the state. BWI Airport measured 6.6 inches of snow, the largest amount since January 2022 when 6.8 inches was recorded.
