ADDISON (CBS11) - Luz Granados Reyes worked her regular shift as a room attendant for the Hotel-Intercontinental in Addison last Saturday night.
The 25-year-old mother of one arrived from Mexico four years ago, according to a family member. Just after midnight, a co-worker walked into the hotel's basement locker room for women staffers. There, according to an arrest affidavit, the worker called 911. Granados-Reyes was in labor, the report indicates.
When paramedics arrived, they found a female newborn lying in a toilet, submerged in the water. Granados-Reyes, according to the report, sat without offering aid to the infant.
The newborn died, despite paramedic's attempt to resuscitate her. Police arrested the mother on Capital Murder charges.
"I'm shocked," Olivia Garcia-Reyes, the aunt of the accused said Wednesday. The two share a small apartment unit near Dallas' Spring Valley corridor, just west of State Highway 75 and north of LBJ 635. Garcia-Reyes said her niece loves and adores her 2-year-old son, but she had no idea she was pregnant. "I didn't know until the police came," she said in Spanish.
Child Protective Services officials did not remove the two year old from the aunt's care after the arrest of Granados-Reyes. The agency has no records of any CPS involvement regarding the well-being of Granados-Reyes' child.
Addison Police consulted with the Dallas County District Attorney's Office to determine which charge would be filed in the case. Under state law, the killing of a person under the age of six can warrant a Capital Murder charge.
Stefan Huber, General Manager of the Hotel-Intercontinental, said there may have been staffers who knew Granados-Reyes was pregnant, but he did not. "It's a terrible tragedy, but we just don't know what happened," Huber said.
Back at the accused killer's apartment, a young relative cries. She wraps her arms around Granados-Reyes' aunt's waist. "We just don't know," the aunt said.
