DALLAS (CBSDFW.COM) - Dallas City Council will hold a special, closed-doors meeting on Wednesday to discuss a deal it approved to allow a sewer-line insurance company to use the city logo in advertisements.
Many residents in Dallas started receiving letters from Service Line Warranties of America a few weeks ago in regards to insurance services the company provided. The envelope, the letterhead and signature on the letter all used the City of Dallas logo.
"I think the first thing I said to my wife was, this is shady," said Randy Brooks. "On the surface, it sounds like someone lined their pockets out of this."
According to the city, it plans to make $450,000 as part of the deal which was unanimously approved by city council back in April.
"We do read everything. We look at everything and when there's 1,100 pages, sometimes one page can get by," said Scott Griggs, a Dallas City Council member.
Griggs said the item was placed on the consent agenda that week, which is where noncontroversial items are all approved in one vote. The item was included on the consent agenda despite a city committee recommending that the deal should not be approved.
"It happened to get by quite a few of us so we'd like to go ahead and get out of this," said Griggs.
Griggs said he believes the city has yet to actually receive any money from the company.
