DALLAS (CBSDFW.COM/AP) — Retired Dallas Police Chief David Brown, who stepped into the national spotlight after a sniper killed five law enforcement officers at a July protest, will step back into the spotlight as a contributor for ABC News.

A news release posted on ABC News' website Wednesday morning quotes a note to staff sent by company President James Goldston announcing Brown's hiring.

The note said Brown will start Jan. 1 as a contributor on topics such as economic inequality, gun violence, race relations, policing and social justice.

A network spokeswoman didn't immediately respond to a request for more information.

Brown announced his retirement after 33 years on the force about two months after the attack.

He officially retired on October 4.

After reflecting on his career with the department Brown included as part of his announcement the following brief statement about the police officer ambush that happened downtown -

"Let's always remember the fallen officers including the five officers on July 7, 2016, and the brave men and women of the Dallas Police Department for their sacrifices to keep Dallas safe.  Their memory will remain with all of us forever.  I know the people of Dallas will never forget the ultimate sacrifice they made on the streets of our city that awful night."

In late October, the City of Dallas saluted Retired Police Chief Brown.

Brown walked into the Morton Meyerson Symphony Center to a standing ovation.

"I really appreciate the support so many of you have given me, so many names," said Brown.

His first order of business after that emotional night he said was well-deserved vacation.

"David Brown is Dallas, Texas. He provides a fair and balanced leadership at the times you need it most," said U.S. Rep. Pete Sessions at the event.
