New Police Cars Don't Have Dashcams
Dozens of new police cars are being put into service in Dallas without dashcams. A squabble that's been going on for two years is now beginning to have a major impact. The Morning News reports up to a dozen new patrol cars are being put into service each week as part of a plan to swap out the design and update the fleet of more than 800 vehicles. The cruisers are going into service without recording equipment often used to either clear officers of wrongdoing or as evidence to justify disciplinary action because the police department says the city hasn't asked for bids for new cameras. It seems the department and city haven't been able to agree on what type of cameras should be used, because officers have complained that the ones being used now often don't boot up properly and have a lot of other bugs. So far, about 60 new cars have been worked into the fleet without dashcams, and it will likely be months before new cameras are installed in the new cruisers.
