Mavs coach Jason Kidd speaks after GM Nico Harrison was fired: "We gotta push forward."

The Dallas Mavericks head coach, Jason Kidd, is speaking for the first time Wednesday night since Nico Harrison was fired as the team's General Manager on Tuesday.

Kidd said Wednesday was a tough day for the organization.

"A business decision was made and we gotta push forward," said Kidd. "My focus is the team and making sure we're prepared for the Suns tonight and any other game that we go forward with. My voice is about he players and figuring out how to get a 'W.'"

Mavs owner announces decision to fire Nico

In a letter to fans, Mavs owner Patrick Dumont said that no one associated with the organization is happy with the start of what they thought would be "a promising season."

"When the results don't meet expectations, it's my responsibility to act," Dumont said. "I've made the decision to part ways with General Manager Nico Harrison."

The team appointed Michael Finley and Matt Riccardi as co-interim general managers while the team searches for a replacement.

"We believe that Ricardi and Finley can do a job, and they will do a good job," Kidd said Wednesday night.

Fans' chants answered?

For jaded Dallas Mavericks fans this was the day they've been asking for since Luka Doncic's shocking trade to the Los Angeles Lakers in February: Harrison, walking out of the Dallas Mavericks headquarters on Tuesday morning after being fired as the team's general manager.

Harrison previously said he knew Doncic was important to the fans, but not to the level that a trade would elicit the reaction it did.

Jason Kidd on "Fire Nico" chants

Wednesday night, Kidd addressed the fans' chants of "Fire Nico" during games after Doncic's trade.

"It was a little disrespectful," Kidd said. "Because the guys are playing hard and they're trying to win. So, with that chant when we're shooting free throws — it's very disrespectful, but understanding that they got their point across, the fans. But we have to move forward."

"I understand the healing process for the fans, but these guys are playing hard," Kidd said Wednesday. "Ever since the trade, these guys have given everything. A lot of times, we didn't get credit for playing hard and finding a way to get in the playing game ... I would hope that we start to get a little credit for that."

"[The players] feel really disrespected, and it's hard to keep guys here in this league when they start to think that the home team is not home and it becomes a visiting place," Kidd continued. "Hopefully that changes tonight."

Mark Cuban on Nico Harrison's firing

Mark Cuban told CBS News Texas' Ro Parrish that while Dumont was not pleased with the fan backlash, that was not why Dumont decided it was time to move on from Harrison.

Cuban pointed to Harrison's mismanagement of the salary cap last season and this season, which led to, and placed them under the 2nd apron — deadlocked in a hard cap that left the Mavs with no roster flexibility.

Harrison's history with the Mavericks

Harrison signed a multi-year contract with the team last April. It was not made clear how long that contract was for.

Harrison was named general manager of the Mavericks on June 28, 2021, following 19 years at Nike, most recently holding the title of vice president of North American sports marketing. Before that, he played professional basketball in Europe for over six years.

During his time with the Mavericks, the team signed Luka Doncic to a $215 million contract extension. Over the past year, the team drafted Dereck Lively II and traded for Daniel Gafford and P.J. Washington Jr. – all of whom have been key contributors to the Mavs' run to the NBA Finals.
