Second Tarrant County inmate escape in two days prompts Sheriff Bill Waybourn to defend jail security
A second inmate escaped from Tarrant County custody in as many days, prompting Sheriff Bill Waybourn to defend the jail system's security.
"The Tarrant County Jail system is a highly secure environment," Waybourn said in a news release. "We are confident that the two recent incidents are isolated and not reflective of the overall safety, security, or daily operations of our facilities."
Trustee walks away from detail
On Tuesday, the inmate — identified as 26‑year‑old Victor Castillo — walked away from a work detail at a laundry facility located at 5400 Resource Drive.
Castillo, a trustee, removed his uniform and fled on foot wearing only white boxers and a white undershirt, according to the Tarrant County Sheriff's Office.
After a roughly 30‑minute search, deputies found him in a dry riverbed and took him back into custody. Agencies assisting included Tarrant County constables, police departments from Fort Worth and Forest Hill, and the Texas Department of Public Safety.
Castillo has been jailed since Jan. 20 on two felony counts of possession of a controlled substance.
Escape during transport Monday
A day earlier, an inmate — identified as Carlos Enrique Rodriguez‑Romero — escaped while being transported by van from a court appearance in downtown Fort Worth to the Green Bay Facility.
Rodriguez‑Romero had been charged with aggravated robbery and felony tampering with government records and was being held on an ICE detainer.
He fled near the jail in an industrial area by the USPS facility on Mark IV Parkway and Great Southwest Parkway.
Multiple agencies — including Tarrant County deputies, Fort Worth police and U.S. Postal Inspectors — joined the search.
CBS News Texas Chopper captured video of deputies taking Rodriguez‑Romero back into custody.
It's still unclear how he escaped the transport van, and the sheriff's office has been asked for more information.
CBS News Texas will provide additional details when they become available.
