Dallas SWAT Officer Kills Man During Standoff
CARROLLTON (CBSDFW.COM) – A SWAT officer shot and killed a Carrollton man during a standoff in a parking lot behind a church Friday night, a department spokesman said.
Carrollton Police spokesman Jon Stovall said officers responded to an emergency call in the 2500 block of Lands End Dr. following a report of an armed, suicidal man at about 8 p.m. Friday.
When police reached the home, the family identified the man as Travis Henderson, 52, and said he drove away by himself.
At 9 p.m., Stovall said police found the car behind a church in the 17600 block of Marsh Lane. Dallas Police were called to help and the SWAT team soon took over, Stovall said.
Dallas Police spokesman James Walton said officers heard something resembling a gunshot from inside the car while awaiting the SWAT team. Upon their arrival, negotiators tried to get Henderson to exit the vehicle peacefully.
Walton said Henderson got out with a handgun. Dallas SWAT Sr. Cpl. Samuel McDonnold feared for his safety, Walton said, and shot Henderson.
The 52-year-old died at the scene. No officers were hurt in the standoff.
