During his final years, Matisse was too crippled to paint and began to work with gouache-coated papers. "Ivy in Flower" was commissioned in 1952 as a design for a stained glass window and Matisse was originally excited about the design, which superimposes a grid pattern on the cutout shapes. Two years later, however, his feelings about the project changed drastically. "It is a miserable business that I should be treated like this at my age, and with all my past work to speak for me," he wrote his son Pierre. What could have gone wrong? The intriguing backstory is the focus of this new exhibition, which features ones of the Dallas Museum of Art's most beloved pieces.

This intimate exhibition features only 16 paintings and 20 etchings and drypoints, but it is a must for art lovers, and especially fans of the revolutionary art form now known as Analytic Cubism. The groundbreaking exhibition focuses on an intense – and pivotal -- period of artistic dialogue between Picasso and Braque, a period that saw the two masters invent a new irreverent style that took the basics of traditional European art into a whole new level.

Texas Ballet Theater artistic director Ben Stevenson brings humor to the ballet with a grand production of Don Quixote, a full-length Company and North Texas premiere. Dance fans of all ages will surely enjoy Miguel de Cervantes' epic masterpiece and lovable characters Don Quixote, and his sidekick Sancho Panza. But keep an eye out for the dancers performing the young lovers Kitri and Basilio. Their wedding pas de deux will undoubtedly be the best dance of the ballet.

If a Beat poet and avant-garde composer wrote an opera, what would happen? Possibly blow people's minds. Based on Allen Ginsberg's poetry and featuring Philip Glass' music, Hydrogen Jukebox is one of the year's biggest operatic events, a provocative music/theater piece that deals with the anti-war movement and the sexual revolutions. The Botanic Garden hosts the Symphony Orchestra this summer with a diverse lineup of concerts.
