Originally from Chicago, Tim is loving life in his new home and is exploring New York City every chance he gets. "I am disgusted to now say that I am a survivor of gun violence."
"There is no reason a citizen needs to be walking the streets with a weapon of war," said Emily Lieberman.
Organizers said they expect more than 500 people to travel to D.C. for the march this week.
The mayor and governor said they expressed a desire for lawmakers to ban assault weapons and high-capacity magazines.
"There's no reason that there should be a feeling danger looming at any event that should be safe for a family," Laura Chaimson said.
She designed yard signs that read "This Home is For: Background checks on all gun sales, banning assault rifles, and gun safety and safe storage."
They left behind strollers, bags of candy tossed to the crowd, wagons, and even a pair of shoes.

Robert "Bobby" Crimo III was arrested after a police chase from North Chicago to Lake Forest. Charges are pending.
The family of Nicolas Toledo said he loved to paint, go fishing and for walks with his family.
The Indiana Hospital Association said the state will still need about 5,000 more nurses by 2031.
"They will certainly be required to be a little bit more guarded, in terms of how they deploy officers and more importantly, when encountering potential suspects in any particular instance."
Darren Bailey faces incumbent JB Pritzker in November.
Bailey handily defeated Aurora Mayor Richard Irvin and four other candidates. Irvin had once been the frontrunner thanks to a $50 million infusion of campaign cash from billionaire Ken Griffin.
