Based in New York, Alex has a master's degree from the Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism and a bachelor's degree in journalism and political science from the University of Washington in Seattle. He started his journalism career as an education reporter for a weekly newspaper in northern New Mexico. Before coming to CBS News in 2009, he worked as a freelance journalist in New York City, reporting throughout the five boroughs for the New York Post's metro section.
