Federal prosecutors suggested Papini should serve one month in custody and seven months under home detention.
Sherri Papini's claims that she was kidnapped by two Hispanic women led to fear in the local Latino community as investigators pursued what they now say was a made-up story. Lilia Luciano looks at how the fallout of the false accusations are still felt today.
Sherri Papini agreed to plead guilty to charges of lying to federal officers and mail fraud.
"I am deeply ashamed of myself for my behavior," Papini said in a statement.
Wearing a gray hoodie, Sherri Papini ran out the jail doors in Sacramento and dashed to a car past a throng of reporters and photographers.
Sherri Papini claimed she had been kidnapped at gunpoint. In reality, authorities say, she was staying with a former boyfriend 600 miles away from her home.
