5 states hold high-stakes midterm primaries

Voters in five states are heading to the polls in primary elections Tuesday ahead of the November midterm elections. For many Republican candidates, these races are a test of their loyalty to former President Donald Trump whose endorsement carries significant weight with many American voters. For Republican voters these races are expected to shape the future of their party moving forward. CBS News political director Fin Gomez has more.

Former RNC spokesman on current GOP

Former President Donald Trump's influence in the Republican party remains strong, nearly five months since he left the White House. Now, several GOP lawmakers are calling for election audits in states that Trump won in 2020, in response to unfounded claims of election fraud. Democrats avoided being shut out of any Congressional races in Tuesday's primaries in California. Democrats are looking to flip several Republican-held House seats in November. In the governor's race, Democratic Lt. Gov. Gavin Newsom will face Republican John Cox, who has the backing of President Trump. Americans remain divided on impeachment

Ahead of Wednesday's public impeachment hearings, a CBS News poll finds more than half of Americans approve of the inquiry into President Trump. However, a majority of Americans are unhappy with how the probe is being handled by both Democrats in Congress as well as President Trump.
