Officers in Pittsburgh shoot at man who fired shots at woman and her dog, police say
Police officers fired shots at a man who shot at a woman and her dog in Pittsburgh's Shadyside neighborhood on Friday, authorities said.
The Allegheny County Police Department said in a news release that officers with the Pittsburgh Bureau of Police were called to the 4700 block of Centre Avenue for a reported assault around 4:15 p.m.
When Pittsburgh police officers arrived at the scene, they found a man threatening a woman and her dog with a gun outside an apartment building. County police said after officers yelled at the man to drop his weapon, he fired "multiple" shots at the victim and the dog. Officers returned fire as the man attempted to run away, and he was later taken into custody.
County police said the preliminary investigation shows that the victim's dog was shot and is being treated for critical injuries. It was not immediately clear on Friday night who shot the dog. The woman suffered facial injuries from the assault and was taken to a local hospital for treatment, county police said.
County police added that before officers arrived at the scene around 4 p.m., the man fired one shot at an employee of a business in the area. That employee was not injured.
It was not immediately known on Friday how many officers fired their weapons or how many shots were fired. Pittsburgh Public Safety said that per policy, Allegheny County police detectives are handling the investigation.
