FORD CITY, Pa. (KDKA) -- Three families in Ford City are dealing with a mess after a fire broke out in one home and spread to two others in Armstrong County.

The fire broke out early Tuesday morning along 5th Avenue in Ford City.

One of the homes was unoccupied because it was being renovated, but a family needed to be evacuated from the other home.

Pam Norris has to break the news to her son, who is currently in Chicago, that his house caught on fire.

"I'm sick," said Pam Norris. "I'm just sick about it. He had the house so nice."

Ford City Fire Chief Dr. William Oleksak said the fire started in the back of the house, but it didn't stop there.

"The two main fire houses are approximately 4 feet apart," said Oleksak. "When I arrived on scene, both houses were burning."

Two parents and three young children were inside the other home at the time. They're okay, but they said the ceiling collapsed and there is extensive fire and water damage.

"We were worried about them," said Tammy Veltri. "We're so thankful to see them here and everything is okay."

Veltri's home was also damaged. She and her husband were away, but they rushed home when they heard about the fire.

"Just the side of our house was what melted and we were very lucky," said Veltri. "There's really not much damage we can't handle, and we weren't here so nobody got hurt."

The cause of the fire is under investigation by the State Police Fire Marshal.
