Greek Or Regular Yogurt, Which Is Better For You?

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) – Greek yogurt is gaining in popularity, but is it any better for you than regular yogurt? That might not always be the case.

When it comes to yogurt, people have many different preferences.

"I like the fruit in the bottom, to be able to mix it up and have the fruit taste in there. It's the best part," one person said.

"I'm not a real big fan of fat free yogurt. I [kind of] like the full taste of yogurt," another person said.

Some people go for Greek yogurt.

"I heard it was better for you, so I thought, well, if it's better for you, I'll try it," one person said.

Greek yogurt simply has had the liquid strained away, so it has a thicker, creamier consistency, similar to sour cream.

"It's a little higher in protein than regular yogurt, because all that liquid has been taken away, so it's more concentrated. And therefore, that makes it a little bit lower in natural sugars," wellness coach Kathy Gillen said.

But because of the tartness, yogurt makers will often add many grams of sugars. This makes it not much better for you than candy.

"They're all getting up to 20, 24, That's the same amount of sugar as a Hershey bar," Gillen said.

Your best bet is to check the label. A general rule of thumb is it's anything over nine grams of sugar, stop.

Even better, change your thinking about how it's supposed to taste. Think of Greek yogurt being more savory than sweet.

You can always add your own fruit for flavor, and instead of making it a sweet treat, it might make a better dip.
