Fish & Boat Commission Investigating 84 Lakes Property Owner For Alleged Illegal Activity
EIGHTY-FOUR, Pa. (KDKA) -- Some who frequent a popular fishing area in Washington County say the owner is getting a raw deal.
He is being investigated for alleged illegal activity, but locals say there's more to the story.
The owner of the pond in Eighty-Four hired someone to drain it on Thursday at the request of the Fish and Boat Commission.
According to the people who fish there, 10 tons of carp were taken out of the pond and placed in an adjacent one.
There are three ponds on the 84 Lakes property, which is owned by 64-year-old Dennis Wilcher.
William Hairston, of Washington County, told KDKA's Brenda Waters, "Families come out here, and they're usually out here setting up tents, some come to cook, some come out here to fish. It's a good place to meet people."
But problems for the owner began in 2014. That's when 84 Lakes was shut down by the Fish and Boat Commission for allegedly having Asian carp in the ponds.
Asian carp is an invasive species and is illegal in Pennsylvania. They can grow up to 100 pounds and can cause economic and environmental harm, as well as harm to human health.
A picture of one of the fish was posted to social media back in 2014 and got a lot of feedback.
One person wrote: "Nice fish but an invasive species should be destroyed. Hope the State fish commission doesn't see it."
Another per wrote: "That is an Asian carp and under federal law in most states should be destroyed."
The Fish and Boat Commission are now back again, this time looking for Asian carp. They also say Wilcher is charging people to fish.
But those who visit say the owner doesn't charge them to fish. He charges people to use his land, a land permit.
"This is his property and he was just charging people to come on his land to fish, but they had to have a fishing license to fish on the lake. The last time we came here, it was $10."
The Fish and Boat Commission says 84 Lakes is still under investigation.
