Best Polish Food In Pittsburgh

For many people, pierogies are one of the first things that come to mind when they think of Pittsburgh. Because of Pittsburgh's large pockets of Polish heritage, Polish foods have become ingrained into the local cuisine so that pierogies are as Pittsburgh as they are Polish. Even though pierogies are a favorite, they are not the only authentic food to be had. Stuffed cabbage, kielbasa and cabbage and noodles in Pittsburgh are among the best anywhere. If you are looking for some great places for Polish food in Pittsburgh, here are some spots to try for pierogies and more.

A couple of years ago, Pierogies Plus was voted "Pittsburgh's Best Pierogi." The owners say "if you want more authentic pierogies, you'll have to fly to Poland." At Pierogies Plus started as a small business and has grown to a 3,000-square-foot company sending pierogies all over the country. Although it has grown, all of the piergoies are still hand made from scratch every single day (including peeling potatoes). Pierogies Plus serves six varieties of piergoies daily with many other fillings available for special order with a two-day notice. In addition, it also serves haluski (cabbage and noodles), stuffed cabbage, kielbasa and other Polish staples.

The Bloomfield Bridge Tavern is the self-proclaimed "Polish party house." Not only does it serve a tasty variety of Polish foods, it also hosts bands, dancing and even an open mic night. At the Bloomfield Bridge Tavern, you can enjoy a Polish platter of kielbasa, pierogi, golabki (cabbage roll), haluski and kluski (dumplings). You can also try a plate of potato pancakes. If you are looking for some alternatives, the tavern also has some standard Pittsburgh fare such as mozzarella sticks, wings and chilli, just be sure to try them with a side of pierogi or haluski.

Located in the Strip District, S&D Polish Deli has been providing tasty Polish treats to Saturday-morning strip goers since 2008. Not only does S&D sell imported Polish products, but it also makes homemade foods according to traditional Polish recipes. Pierogies, of course, are on the menu along with red and white borscht (soup made with beets or potatoes), potato dumplings, stuffed cabbage and letcho pepper stew. If you have a sweet tooth, you can also get nut rolls or kolaczki filled with nuts or apricots.

Cop Out Pierogies makes handmade pierogies for several restaurants in Pittsburgh and it makes them frozen for you to take home as well. Not only does Cop Out serve 14 pierogies in a "dozen," but it will make them with any filling you like. Some customer favorites are mac & cheese filled and potato, cheese and jalepeno. If you've never been able to enjoy pierogies because of glutten allergies, Cop Out has a gluten-free option that you can special order. Dessert pierogies are also available with delightful fillings like apple cheesecake, salted caramel or Bavarian cream.

Located in Brentwood, Clara's Pittsburgh Pierogies makes homemade Polish specialties daily. Hot sausage, kielbasa and creamed cucumbers are on the menu. It also offers the perfect vegetarian meal of potato pierogies, haluski and potato pancakes. There are also pierogies of all flavors from standard cheese and potato to feta and spinach, cheeseburger and peperoni pizza. Sweet lekvar-filled and apricot-filled pierogies are also on the menu.
