Afternoon thunderstorms expected to move through the Pittsburgh area today
A round of thunderstorms is expected to move through the Pittsburgh area this afternoon.
Any Alert Days Ahead? Nope
Aware: Yesterday (Monday) we hit a high of 53°. It was the warmest day since the 4th of the month. It also broke a stretch of 7 days in a row with temperatures 'below average'. This month is going to be close to average when it comes to February temperatures. Currently, we are -1° for the month.
Light rain is expected for this morning, but my attention is really focused on this afternoon when we will have a couple of weak thunderstorms that will push through right as your child is getting out of school. These sneaky storms will likely move through with little to no fanfare, but anytime we have lightning occurring with lots of people outside it has our attention and that is what it looks like will occur this afternoon.
Right now it looks like any weak storms that we see would occur between 2 p.m. and 6 p.m. with the highest chance of seeing storms occurring north of Pittsburgh but south of I-80. A little shortwave will sweep through with just enough instability in place to see storm development. Places south of Pittsburgh should not see any storms today.
The other big story today is temperatures with temperatures a good five degrees or so warmer this morning than model data was indicating. I am going to keep our morning temperatures in the mid-40s with our daily low hitting just before midnight. I have Pittsburgh seeing a daily low of around 40 degrees, but morning temperatures will likely not dip below 44 degrees. Rain showers will be fairly widespread with the best chance for rain happening around 9 a.m. It should be dry for your lunch hour with more rain and the storm chance arriving around 2 p.m.
I have afternoon temperatures in the 50s all afternoon with highs in the low 50s. Noon temperatures should also be in the low 50s.
Looking ahead most of Wednesday is looking dry with highs back in the low to mid-50s. Rain arrives after sunset.
Rain will be fairly widespread on Thursday morning. Behind Thursday's rain will come colder weather rolling in for the weekend with snow showers possible at times both on Friday and Saturday.
