Play Day: Broad Run Golfer's Club

Today we head out to the other side of West Chester and Broad Run Golfer's Club, where during a recent visit I was encouraged by the new management's commitment to bringing this club back to its former prominence among daily fee layouts in the area.

It is certainly all there -- a solid Rees Jones design with some very challenging golf holes and spectacular vistas.   Now, a renewed focus on conditioning ties it all together, just as it did when the course made its debut more than a decade ago.

It came upon the local golf scene as Tattersall back in 2000, but had fallen on some hard times of late.   Now Broad Run, the club is bouncing back ... and one of the telltale signs is the lack of bouncing around you do on the cart paths, which have fianlly been filled and repaved.  For you purists who walk and don't give a hoot about the cart paths, rest assured money is being put into the greens, tees, bunkers and fairways as well.

They're also trying to make Broad Run a more enjoyable place to hang after your round.   They've scrapped the idea of fine dining at the Boardley House Grille in favor of what most golfers like to see -- tasty pub food and a casual atmosphere in which to relax and enjoy a beverage and a ballgame on TV.

The views and atmosphere haven't changed -- they're still terrific.

Here's my Broad Run rundown:

Fees:   They range from a twilight rate of $25  to weekend mornings at $79.

Best View:   There are a lot of 'em, but there's a reason #2 is the signature hole.  It is an amazing vista (see photo above).

Best Hole:  No clear cut winner among some very good ones, but I like 18 as a finishing hole with OB left and bunkers right on your tee shot, and a pond up the right side that comes into play on your second and third shots (especially with a slightly downhill-sidehill lie), and an interesting green.

Local Knowledge:   Subtract a couple of clubs on the drop shot par 3 17th, which lists as 160 off the blue tees but plays much shorter than that due to a drop of more than 100 feet from tee to green.   It is also far better to miss it short.  Take it from me, long and left is not good.  Ugh.

Best Bet in the Boardley House:  Who doesn't like a good burger after golf?  You also might want to try to Pulled Pork Sandwich.
