More Parents Choosing To Have Kids Attend Cyber School At Home

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - Colby Brown-Hogan is not your typical student. Instead of learning from a traditional classroom setting at a school, he now learns from the comfort of his home.

Months ago, the 7th grader used to fear going to school. "I didn't really like it because kids used to pick on me and stuff," said Colby. His mother says one time; a student threw cleaning products in her son's face. She says as a mom, she was frustrated and wanted to protect her child. Since Colby's education had to continue he and his mother thought the best option was to attend school online.

From home, Colby, takes English, Math, History and other classes online through Achievement House Charter School. The teachers lead virtual classrooms via Skype. The online public school based in Chester County, Pennsylvania is for grades 7-12. Not every student from Achievement House is a bullying victim. Some students have unique situations and need specialized attention.

"Often time peer culture can be a distraction," said Achievement House CEO Dr. Timothy Daniels. "This gives parents a chance to control that learning atmosphere. This may be a better fit for their families and the youngster," said Dr. Daniels. He says a growing number of parents and students are becoming more interested in this online option.

Some educators worry that younger cyber students are sharing in a true classroom experience. "The relationship between students in a class and between teachers and their students is a critical piece," said Dr. Frances Rust from the University of Pennsylvania.

Colby and his mother believe cyber school is a better choice. Achievement House provides laptops, internet connection, and a printer to its students. Right now the graduation rate is at 60% according to the school's CEO. For more information go to: www.achievementcharter.com
