More than 800 people involved in illegal car meetups in Philadelphia Sunday morning, police say
More than 800 people were involved in a pair of car meetups overnight, Philadelphia police said Sunday.
The first meetup happened near West York and North Broad streets just after midnight. According to police, between 800-1,000 juveniles gathered in the area, where cars were racing and doing donuts in the street.
Investigators said several fights were broken up at this meetup before the crowd was dispersed. On Sunday afternoon, police said some people were arrested for disorderly conduct, however, the exact number of arrests or what led up to them wasn't immediately clear.
Another illegal meetup was reported about four miles away at Torresdale and Adams avenues in Northeast Philadelphia, where police said at least another 100 cars were involved. Officials said people were throwing items at police patrol vehicles, but the meetup had cleared out by around 3:15 a.m.
According to police, officers issued several tickets before dispersing the cars. No arrests were made at this meetup.
