COPS: Del. Man Arrested In Alleged Shooting Of 2, Including Young Child
LINCOLN, Del. (CBS) – Police say a 21-year-old man was arrested after he allegedly fired one round into a house in Delaware, striking a young child and an adult man.
Authorities say the incident happened Sunday afternoon around 12:15.
Troopers were dispatched to a residence on the 21000 block of West Mayhew Drive in Cedar Creek Estates for a report of a shooting.
Officials say an investigation revealed that Juan J. Shirey was standing outside of the residence with a gun, when his mother saw him and went outside to take it from him, due to recent drug and weapons charges.
Police say as Shirey began to hand the firearm to his mother, a round discharged from the weapon and struck a 23-month-old boy in the leg.
Authorities say the bullet traveled through the child and into the hand of his 24-year-old uncle, who was standing behind him.
The child and the male were taken to Milford Memorial Hospital where the adult male was treated and released.
Authorities say the child was later flown to A.I. duPont Children's Hospital where he was admitted in good condition.
Police say Shirey was charged with assault, possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony and reckless endangering.
Authorities say he was arraigned and committed to Sussex Correctional Institution in lieu of $140,000 cash bond.
Officials say a .45 caliber handgun was recovered at the scene.
