Chester Stadium Ready for Phila. Union Soccer

by KYW's Paul Kurtz

The Philadelphia Union moves into its new $122 million home in Chester on Sunday.

The venue is open, airy and intimate with terrific views of the Delaware River. Of course, the centerpiece of PPL Park is a broad expanse of patriot bermuda grass.

CEO Nick Saciwica says the sight lines are specifically designed for soccer.

"If you notice the American football stadiums, their rake is a lot lower because the ball spends a lot of time in the air so the fans don't need as sharp an angle to view. But in soccer, the ball, most of its time is on the ground so the rake of the seats needs to be pitched a little sharper so that everybody can see the field."

With a seating capacity of more than 18,000 and a full season ticket base of about 12,000, Union management expects to approach a sell-out for all their remaining home games.
