Car Safety Restraints For Your Dog
By Nan Talleno
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - Each year thousands of animals die, become injured, or are needlessly lost in car accidents. Fines are now in place in New Jersey for traveling without pet safety restraints. These restraints are important because they help lessen your pet's chances of injury and may even save your pet's life.
According to Barkbuckleup.com, a 60-pound dog can become a 2,700 pound projectile, at just a 35mph collision!
There are several choices of pet safety protection available. Take the time to compare and always look for the higher quality of protection. Don't skimp when it comes to your pet's safety.
One of the most popular accessories for traveling is the crate, whether it's a soft crate, wire or plastic.
It's the only choice for feline travel but serves extremely well for dogs too, if room is available. It can protect them from dangerous shifting or flying objects in the car but the drawback is that it cannot be attached to a seat belt.
If you have a small dog, a dog car seat which attaches to the seatbelt would work. They're cushioned and even elevate your dog to safely see out of the window.
But, overall, for dogs of most sizes, the dog safety car harness or dog seat belt is a very good choice. It attaches to the seat belt directly. Look for harnesses that allow your dog to comfortably sit or lie down but will effectively restrain him/her in the event of an accident. Look for a comfortable fit; too large is ineffective and the dog can dangerously slip out of it, while too tight can cause major discomfort. Wide straps that are comfortably lined works best, distributing the impact pressure more efficiently. It's important, though for construction and safety purposes to make sure to purchase a better quality one.
There are Champion harnesses online, too, for extra large dogs who need the extra length and space to lie down.
