TRENTON, N.J. (CBS) -- A recent poll finds the highest support ever for same-sex marriages in New Jersey.

New Jersey voters support same-sex marriage by a margin of 57 to 37 percent, according to a survey conducted by the Quinnipiac University Polling Institute, where Maurice Carroll is the director.

"It's a bit of a move up, from 52-42 approval a month or so ago, the last time we did it," Carroll tells KYW Newsradio.  "So the legislature passed gay marriage [see related story], Governor Christie vetoed it [another related story], and people say in this one they agree with the legislature that it's a good idea -- but the votes are all over the lot."

Carroll says when those polled were given three options -- gay marriage, civil unions, or no recognition at all --  47 percent were for gay marriages, 34 percent were for same-sex civil unions, and 13 percent said neither should be legal.

And Carroll says that although people disagree with Governor Christie by a 2-1 margin on gay marriage, they agree with his proposal  to put  the issue up for the voters to decide.
