Weather along the East Coast and COVID staffing issues are being blamed for thousands of nationwide flight cancellations.
Flight cancellations in the New York metro area and other northeastern states began Wednesday as the storm approached the region.
By Thursday afternoon, flight-tracking service FlightAware.com reported that nearly 1,500 flights were cancelled due to Hurricane Matthew.
As of Thursday night, airlines have canceled more than 2,400 flights scheduled for Friday. Newark Liberty International Airport, John F. Kennedy Airport and LaGuardia Airport have more than a 1,000 cancellations.
