There was no immediate claim of responsibility for the attacks. Islamic State militants have carried out similar attacks before against Shiite shrines in the Syrian capital and elsewhere.
In a series of interviews on the Sunday news shows, Secretary of State John Kerry said the case for intervention in Syria's 2 1/2-year civil war was strengthening each day and that he expected American lawmakers to recognize the need for action when the "credibility of the United States is on the line.''
President Barack Obama on Saturday made the case for consequences against Syria for an alleged chemical attack, and said he will seek authorization from Congress for a military strike.
Colvin, a Long Island native who worked for Britain's Sunday Times, was killed along with French photographer late last month during shelling inside the besieged city of Homs.
The Red Cross said Friday that it is transporting the remains of American reporter Marie Colvin, originally of Oyster Bay, and French photographer Remi Ochlik to Damascus.
