Zohran Mamdani plans Inauguration Day block party in NYC's famed Canyon of Heroes

New York City Mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani's inauguration will be highlighted by a block party in the famed Canyon of Heroes.

Mamdani's "2026 Inauguration Block Party" will be held Jan. 1 along the stretch of Broadway in Lower Manhattan that is known for ticker-tape parades, his transition team announced Sunday.

If you plan to go, here's what to know

Mamdani will be sworn in as the city's 111th mayor on the steps of City Hall in a joint ceremony with Comptroller-elect Mark Levine and reelected Public Advocate Jumaane Williams starting at 1 p.m. on Jan. 1, the mayor-elect's team said.

The block party will be on Broadway, between Liberty Street and Murray Street, which is adjacent to City Hall Park, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., according to Mamdani's team.

"This inauguration is a celebration of the movement we built, the mandate we won, and the city we are prepared to lead," Mamdani said in a statement. "Working New Yorkers are at the heart of our agenda and we invite them to join us as we welcome this new era of politics to City Hall."

There will be room for tens of thousands of New Yorkers, organizers said, but anyone interested in attending has to RSVP online first.

The day's festivities will include music, performances and interfaith elements, in addition to remarks from the three elected officials, Mamdani's team said.

An "interesting opportunity" for Mamdani, pundit says

CBS News New York spoke to political analyst J.C. Polanco about what to expect.

"Mayor Mamdani has a very interesting opportunity here," said Polanco, a professor at the University of Mount Saint Vincent in the Bronx. "He can, in fact, reclaim a new day. He can bring about that young, energetic, happy, youthful warrior to the scene on inauguration day, but at the same time recognize about half of the city voted against it and he has to unify the city. If he's able to do both on inauguration day, I consider that a success, celebrations and all."

Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams chose to have his swearing-in ceremony in the heart of Times Square shortly after the New Year's Eve celebration ushering in 2022.
