Yankees, Raul Ibanez Agree To 1-Year Deal
NEW YORK (WFAN) -- One day after officially trading embattled starter A.J. Burnett to Pittsburgh, the Yankees have agreed to terms with left-handed slugger Raul Ibanez, CBSSports.com and WFAN's Jon Heyman reports.
The Yankees agreed to pay the Pirates nearly $20 million of the $33 million remaining on Burnett's contract. That freed up more than enough cash to sign Ibanez for one year at $1.1 million.
The deal is pending a physical.
"The preference would be to find someone from the left side that can do some damage against right-handed pitching," Yankees general manager Brian Cashman said Sunday. "But at the same time ... I'm looking for a player that my manager could put out for defense."
The 39-year-old spent the past three seasons in Philadelphia, where he hit .245 with 20 home runs and 84 RBIs in 2011.
The Yankees will now likely turn their attention to re-signing reserve infielder Eric Chavez.
