Yankees Claim Infielder Matt Antonelli Off Waivers From Orioles
NEW YORK (WFAN) - The Yankees claimed infielder Matt Antonelli off of waivers from the Baltimore Orioles, the club announced on Thursday.
The 27-year-old will begin his Bombers career at Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre this weekend.
The Massachusetts native was hitting just .204 with a homer and seven RBIs for Baltimore's Triple-A affiliate before being plucked by New York.
A second baseman by trade, Antonelli was a first-round pick of the Padres in 2006. The right-handed hitter is a lifetime .261 hitter in the Minors, and he had a brief 21-game stint for the Padres in 2008, hitting .193 with three RBIs. He hasn't been back on a 25-man Major League roster since.
With the addition of Antonelli to the 40-man roster, the Yankees transferred left-handed pitcher Cesar Cabral -- currently on the shelf with a left elbow fracture -- to the 60-day disabled list.
Not the most exciting addition in baseball history, but it never hurts to have a utility infielder at your disposal. Offer your thoughts and comments below...
