Yankee Fans React To Jeter's Season-Ending Injury

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) - The Yankees loss in Game 1 of the American League Championship Series Saturday night just added insult to injury, with Yankee captain Derek Jeter suffering a season-ending broken ankle.

"His ankle fractured, so he's out. He's out. They talked about a three-month recovery period. Won't jeopardize his career but he will not be playing any more for us this year," Yankees manager Joe Girardi told reporters after the 12-inning 6-4 loss.

Some Yankees fans called Jeter the heart and soul of the team and questioned how the playoff run will go now that he's out.

"It's gonna be completely different out there. Playoff baseball in the Bronx without number 2," one fan told WCBS 880's Peter Haskell.

"It was the most devastating thing I've ever seen at Yankee Stadium. I've never seen Derek Jeter get carried off before. Even when he dove into the stands, got his face all bloodied up, I've never seen that," another fan told Haskell.

Jeter rolled over his knee when he dove to try to field a ball in the 12th inning. He stayed down for a few moments and had to be helped off the field.

Fans said Jeter's injury is a big blow to the team.

"He's won five championships, he's got 3,000 hits. One year after another, it's another milestone that he's passing another Hall of Famer," a fan told 1010 WINS' Glenn Schuck.

"He's the man, he's everything," another fan told Schuck.

But some fans said this may be the lightning rod the team needed to win their 28th World Series title.

"Let's do it for the captain," a fan told Schuck.

Girardi said the injury reminded him of closer Mariano Rivera's season-ending ACL tear while shagging fly balls earlier in the season.

"Kinda brought me back there and I said oh boy, something's wrong. If he's not getting up, something's wrong because we've seen what he's played through the last month and a half and the pain that he's been in and how he's found a way to get it,"

Jayson Nix is expected to take over at shortstop and Eduardo Nunez has been added to the post-season roster in place of Jeter.

The Yankees host the Detroit Tigers for Game 2 of the ALCS Sunday afternoon.
