Police: Woman Found Dead In Scarsdale Home; Man In Custody

SCARSDALE, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) -- A man was in police custody late Wednesday, after a woman's body was found in a home in Scarsdale.

As CBS2's Lou Young reported, police are treating the case as a homicide.

A 911 call came in just after 10 a.m. Wednesday, and police rushed to the house at 50 Lincoln Rd. in the upscale Heathcote section of Scarsdale, 1010 WINS' Al Jones reported.

"Respond to 50 Lincoln Rd. The report is that a female has been hurt seriously, and no further information was given by the calling party," a dispatcher told officers when the crime was reported. "Arrive on scene and wait outside until patrol units enter."

When police went inside, they found the rarest of crimes in the Westchester County village -- it has been nearly 40 years since a homicide was last reported in Scarsdale.

"There hasn't been a homicide in Scarsdale since 1977," said Scarsdale police Capt. Thomas Altizio. "and you know, again, I just want to emphasize that this is not a random act. It's an isolated incident. I can confirm that both the person that we have in custody and the victim resided in the house."

Through the open door, a collection of family photos was visible on the mantel as police moved through the $3 million home – now a crime scene -- on Wednesday night, CBS2's Tony Aiello reported.

Sources said the crime scene was very bloody.

"I am shocked. I am absolutely shocked. Really?" a neighbor said.

The house is residence of Dr. Robin Goldman and her husband, Jules Reich.

Police confirmed the victim was a 58-year-old woman, and the suspect, who was taken into custody at the scene, was a 61-year-old man – the same person who called 911.

Dr. Goldman is a respected pediatrician at the Montefiore Medical Group Family Health Center in the Bronx.

Those who saw Dr. Goldman daily reacted with shock to her presumed passing.

"Very pleasant lady -- extremely pleasant. Always smile, always say, 'Hi, good morning, hello,'" said security guard Raymond Kassim. "A lady of that stature -- pleasant personality -- who would want to do that? I don't know."

Reich works as a financial adviser. Neighbors said the couple was estranged and Reich had not been around much lately.

Goldman and Reich have lived in the house since 1997. They are also active members of nearby Temple Young Israel, Aiello reported.

Court records showed last summer, right after their daughter's wedding, Reich filed for divorce from Goldman.

Neighbors late Wednesday were assuming the worst, even though police have not positively identified Goldman as the victim.

"It's upsetting, to say the least," said neighbor Dana Novenstein. "It's very upsetting to know that something like this could happen."

"I've been living here 34 years. Nothing like this has ever, ever happened. This is a very safe neighborhood," said Judy Raphael.

In 1977, Yale University college senior Bonnie Garland was bludgeoned to death by her boyfriend, Yale graduate Richard Herrin. Herrin was convicted and served 17 years in prison before being released in 1995.

Police said they would release more information in the latest case upon finishing their preliminary investigation.
